The golden summer of 1914, just before the Great War, was a magical time for young Kathleen Eleanor Phillips. Kathleen was born in 1905 and lived in Oxford where she spent wonderful summer holidays in Birchington, Kent with her best bear friends, Pat and Nora.

During this time she kept a "Nature Note Book" with diary entries, pencil drawings and water colours. The diary entries recounted playing in the garden with Pat and Nora, riding her bicycle and frolicking in the sand at the beach.
